Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
