Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
