Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
