Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
