Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
