Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Schemes: The History of Craps
Be brilliant, play smart, and learn how to play craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
