Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
