Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps.
