Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
