Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
