Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
