Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
