Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
